Lexus and USGA Support Hook A Kid On Golf

June 09, 2008
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (June 9, 2008)—Lexus and the United States Golf Association (USGA) have identified Hook A Kid On Golf (HAKOG) as the charitable recipient to receive additional support based on the organization’s contributions to the game. The program provides communities throughout the country with the tools and resources necessary to start their own comprehensive youth golf programs.
The donation will be made by the USGA under the Lexus Drive for Success Grant, which will provide funding to set up golf clinic sites in various communities. The program also provides young golfers the opportunity to continue playing golf beyond their initial introductory golf experience and incorporate the game as part of their lifestyle.

“Lexus is pleased to support Hook A Kid On Golf, an innovative program that creates opportunities for youth to get involved in the game and helps them continue playing as they grow,” said Dave Nordstrom, Lexus vice president of marketing. “When we partnered with USGA, we wanted to be part of the sport’s heritage and be involved at a grassroots level.

This relationship with Hook A Kid On Golf is the perfect opportunity to share the values of golf with a young audience and engage them in the lifestyle. We share Hook A Kid On Golf’s philosophy of innovation and pursuing greatness and are excited to be involved with their program. Lexus is proud to provide kids with tools that are inherent to golfing and will stay with them over their lifetime.”

The Hook A Kid On Golf program, founded in 1990 by the West Palm Beach, Fla.-based National Alliance for Youth Sports (NAYS), seeks to encourage youngsters to learn the game and continue to play golf, while instilling in them an understanding of golf’s rules, etiquette and history. The USGA assisted with the creation of HAKOG with a $90,000 startup challenge grant and provides continued support for the program.

“Lexus and the USGA’s generous donation to the Hook A Kid On Golf program will provide the next generation of would-be golfers greater access to the game,” said Bob Murphy, national spokesperson for Hook A Kid On Golf. “Involving kids in sports at an early age helps improve self esteem and forms a foundation for healthy habits later on in life. This contribution will help make a difference in many children’s lives.”

During the USGA’S Open Championships this summer, beginning with the U.S. Open held June 9-15 at Torrey Pines in San Diego, Lexus will host activities at the Lexus Performance Drive Tent including: the Lexus Full Swing Golf Simulator, daily autograph signings, putting clinics and visits with golf greats, E-Shot photo opportunities with a full-size replica of the U.S. Open trophy in front of a backdrop of the Torrey Pines Golf Course, vehicle displays and courtesy vehicles for players and VIPs.

In early 2007, Lexus and the USGA announced their unprecedented multi-year partnership. The landmark agreement made Lexus the first automotive partner in the USGA’s 113-year history and the official vehicle of the U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open and U.S. Senior Open.

Championships will be conducted at the following times and venues: the U.S. Open will be played June 9-15 at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, Calif.; the U.S. Women’s Open will be played June 26-June 29 at Interlachen Country Club in Edina, Minn. and the U.S. Senior Open will be played July 31-Aug. 3 at the Broadmoor Golf Club in Colorado Springs, Colo.
